Makeup Tips Building a Mascara Wardrobe for the Lashes

Makeup Tips Building a Mascara Wardrobe for the Lashes

Makeup artist Alice Lane is talking mascara. “Right now, I’m obsessed with Tom Ford’s Extreme formula. It’s got this big fat wand and it’s really, really black. It’s gorgeous. Fantastic. That’s what I use at night,” she says, before firing off a list of versatile, high-tech favorites—including M.A.C.’s Haute & Naughty (“amazing for bottom lashes”) and Topshop’s classic mascara (“a great chocolate brown for day”)—that she carries around in her kit.
Lane may be a professional, but the idea of creating a versatile mascara wardrobe—one supernatural lash stain for the weekend, another lengthening and separating formula for the office, a fattening and thickening alternative for parties, a waterproof tint for the gym—has made its way to the mainstream in recent years.
With beauty companies turning out better, smarter, longer-lasting pigments for fall—Clinique’s Bottom Lashes formula contains smudge-proof, thermally activated polymers that dissolve only in the presence of hot water, while Dior’s New Look is loaded with shiny, patented 3-D black-glass pigments—the possibilities can seem overwhelming. Here, Vogue sorts through the season’s best new and existing formulas in the service of rounding out your collection.

Art of Eyeliner

Art of Eyeliner

Lining your eyes is an art form, with many techniques available to attain that stroke of perfection. Having a proper working knowledge of those techniques—from smudging to creating a cat eye—and the right tools to achieve them are all that’s needed to become a master painter. Here are the essential tips you need to know to apply eyeliner.

Smudged Eye

What the Eiffel Tower is to Paris, smudged liner is to the smoky eye. To achieve this über-sexy look, makeup artist Nick Barose recommends starting with a pencil that is sharp and pointy “to really get into that lash line.” Try: L’Oréal Extra-Intense Liquid Pencil Eyeliner in Carbon Black. Simply skim your pencil along both top and bottom lash lines, not worrying too much about precision (this is the one makeup look where a steady hand doesn’t particularly matter). Then immediately smudge the color into your lash lines with a sponge-tipped smudge brush, taking great care to work quickly before your liner sets. Clean up any excess with a Q-tip dipped in makeup remover to ensure the look doesn’t get too messy.

Cat Eye

The classic cat-eye liner is perfect for giving you that coy, flirty look. While liquid liner is the obvious go-to (try Urban Decay 24/7 Waterproof Liquid Eyeliner), beginners can benefit from using a flattened angled brush and a gel eyeliner, such as Lancôme Liner Design Long Wear Calligraphy Gel Eyeliner.

“For perfect cat eyes, the key is making the right shape,” Barose says. Sit in front of a mirror, preferably one with a table or flat surface in front of it. Dip the angled brush into your pot of gel eyeliner, plant the elbow of the arm holding the brush onto the table (to steady your hand), and proceed to paint a thin line starting from the outer corner of the eye and working your way in. To make the process easier, be sure to look forward and slightly down as you apply. Always avoid tugging on your skin while lining. Constant tugging can leave a crooked line when you release the skin and can eventually cause wrinkles.

To create the signature flick at the tail, angle the flat tip of your brush slightly up and out. Press the tip into the skin to create the guideline for the flick and slowly sketch the wing at a slant. Then proceed to connect the end of the flick to your lash line, about one-fifth of the way in from the outer corner. You can choose to connect the line closer to the middle of your lid for a more dramatic look. Fill the flick in with gel eyeliner, and you are done. “Add some extra mascara on upper lashes, too, because that lifts the eyes,” Barose says.

Tightlining and Waterlining

For instantly defined eyes and thicker-looking lashes, line the inner rims of your lower lash lines—which is called “waterlining”—and the inner rims of your upper lash lines—which is called “tightlining.” A swipe of basic black waterproof liner (try Make Up For Ever Aqua Eyes in Black) is all you need here.

A Note on Types of Liner

While there are many different types, finishes and colors of eyeliners available, what you choose to go with should be based on the final effect that you’re seeking. Looking for something to complement your green eyes? Go with a purple-based liner, like YSL Dessin Du Regard Crayon Yeux Haute Tenue Eye Pencil in Smoky Purple. Want something more sparkly for a night out? Opt for a glitter liner, like Too Faced Starry-Eyed Liquid Eyeliner.
How do you prefer to line your eyes?

Tom Hanks And Will Smith Team Up At Governor's Awards 2012

Tom Hanks And Will Smith Team Up At Governor's Awards 2012

It's been a relatively quiet year for both Tom Hanks and Will Smith, though both teamed up for the Governor's Awards 2012 on Saturday evening (December 1, 2012). Producers of the show had enlisted the Hollywood giants to present DreamWorks Animation CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg with the first Oscar of awards' season.
Katzenberg received an honorary award from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Science for his humanitarian work. Smith introduced the revered producer, while Hanks gave fitting speech about the CEO's generosity and his fundraising efforts after the 9/11 attacks. "Jeffrey Katzenberg doesn't have to do any of these things. But Jeffrey Katzenberg cannot help but to do all of these things - it is in his DNA. Jeffrey Katzenberg is a brilliant man, a hardworking man, a visionary and one of the most powerful men (in Hollywood)." Joking about his time spent with Katzenberg, Hanks added, "It's not just the invitation to breakfast. It's the lunch that lasts exactly 47 minutes. It's the follow-up phone call. It's the tour of the facility. It's the follow-up phone call. It's the letter to remind you of the phone call and the tour of the facility. And finally, it's the contribution you make."
Elsewhere at the ceremony, Quentin Tarantino gave a speech for stuntman Hal Needham, who revolutionized the stunt business by appearing in 310 feature films. "He is the man," said the Django Unchained director, "Before he became a director, he pushed the boundaries of what could be done.I have ripped off many shots from you. Today, I say thank you very much."

Pete Doherty Explains Bizarre Train Uniform Theft

Pete Doherty Explains Bizarre Train Uniform Theft

British rocker Pete Doherty has explained a bizarre story which suggested he was banned from France's rail network for stealing staff uniforms, revealing he took a pair of shoes from a platform when he turned up at the station in hotel slippers.
The Libertines star, who is now based in Paris, hit headlines in October (12) when he alleged he was unable to travel across France by train due to an investigation into a number of missing goods.
He wrote in a post on his blog, "(Taking) the train is out of the question. I am currently in discussion with (the train company) regarding my accountability for a missing trolley-load of staff uniforms (gaberdine wool mind you), cold meats, cutlery."
Doherty has now explained that he took a pair of guard's shoes from a station in Paris after arriving there without proper footwear, but insists he mailed them back to bosses at the train line.
He tells fastmazaa.blogspot.com , "A pair of shoes had been left on the platform. And I was in a bit of a state, I was basically in these hotel slippers, and I was late for a train at Gare de Lyon. So I just put these shoes on. It was only afterwards as the train was pulling out I saw a ticket inspector with no shoes coming down the platform. It was comic more than anything. I posted them back. I just changed the laces from black to pink."
A spokesperson for the rail network, Societe Nationale des Chemins de fer Francais (Sncf), insists the star has not been banned from the network, but has no knowledge of Doherty's alleged shoe theft.

Big Sean Launching Youth Foundation

Rapper Big Sean is launching a new organisation to help young children in his native Detroit, Michigan.
The Clique hitmaker has created the Sean Anderson Foundation to aid youngsters' development and schooling.
In a statement to fastmazaa.blogspot.com, he writes, "The mission of the Sean Anderson Foundation is to assist in the education, health, safety and well-being of Detroit area school-aged youth. I want to use my awareness to improve the situations in our school systems in particular.
"My school played an integral part of making me the man I am today and without that education and extra care, I don't know where I would be today. So, I just want to help support the well being of young people in anyway that I can."
The star's mother Myra Anderson will serve as president of the foundation, which is named after the rapper.
